The pieces are from a nearby glacier, the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull. Large, significantly larger pieces of glacier after calving drift in the lagoon first but slowly but surely they drift into the ocean. They are buffeted by wind and wave and finally washed ashore at this black sandy beach. They are subjected to more wave and wind action until they get smaller and smaller until they disappear.
