On 8 July 2013, with a small official ceremony, Gezi Park was briefly opened by the authorities, only to be closed by authorities several hours later. The Taksim Solidarity Platform, leader of the Occupy Gezi Park movement, had called for a gathering to mark the park's reopening. In the ensuing confrontation, police officers fired tear gas, water cannon and plastic bullets at demonstrators and bystanders trying to enter the park or moving throughout the general area. There were multiple instances of police specifically targeting photojournalists or anyone with cameras.
