All my life I thought the upper structure pictured here was a conning tower, but found out recently it is a "sail." A conning tower is a compartment inside a sail. All large submarines have a sail but only older ones also have a conning tower. In newer submarines, the functions of a conning tower have been taken over by another portion of the sub. At least I think that is what I learned.
