It’s one of the pleasures of spring. Emerging primroses pop up in the most unlikely spots brimming with colour and life to show that better times are on the way. They shout “I’m optimistic” to winter’s drab remains. Did you know that the bright yellow eyes to their flowers are designed to make sure that insects know where to find the nectar they crave. It’s cleverer than that though – the yellow bits show up even more brightly to creatures that can see in the ultraviolet part of the spectrum of light. It’s one of nature’s signposts. They have sophisticated mechanisms to get what they want from the relationship they have with other living things. They’re taken for granted every day but their brilliant design and ability to manipulate their surroundings makes them much better than me.
