I heard two BLACK RAILS calling from the marsh. A minute or so later, one of the birds made a very brief appearance out of the pickle-weed and was moving in my direction. The bird was sparrow-size, dark grey underneath and chestnut color on its back. Perhaps it was driven out from another rail’s territory. The encounter with the rail was brief and resulted in a couple of snapshots before the bird went back into hiding.
