We encountered a few such sections where the snow had not melted away. Some of these sections were quite treacherous, especially since they were often located in stretches that were sloped, and where there was no way to bypass the mess. Some folks even turned back.
The presence of fresh snow is actually not that dangerous. Problems happen when it gets compacted into ice due to people stepping on it. It is much worse when the ice starts melting as the temperature rises - which was the case on the day that we hiked the AT!
