HAYNES DESCRIPTION:
The Walter Belgrave designed Standard Ten with its ‘Gold Star’ engine was introduced in October 1957. David Ely, a brilliant engineer in his day, derived the ‘Ten’ engine from the old ‘Eight’ engine by increasing by increasing the bore from 58mm to 63mm. Later on, a further development of this unit went on to power the Triumph Herald and Spitfire. Although its difficult to believe today, the Standard ten was a very successful rally car, in the late to mid 50’s, as witnessed by its competition performances; for example 1st and 3rd in the 1953 RAC Rally, a class win in the 1956 Alpine Rally and 13th and 14th in the horrendous 1958 Monte Carlo Rally. Over 172,000 Standard Ten’s were made during its production run, which finally finished in 1960.
