Portugal can rightly pride itself in having produced the most fantastic, theatrical and scenographic Baroque painted tiles in all of Europe. Largely carried out in Lisbon workshops, this immense production of tiles is widely diffused throughout continental Portugal, the Madeira and Azores island territories and several former Portuguese colonies, such as Angola and, quite particularly, Brazil, where it constitutes one of the most important parts of that country’s Portuguese artistic heritage.
