Waving Crabs

Knokke

The Waving Crabs is a dancing ensemble with vortex and fountain,
“a technical yet highly poetic water ballet”. The idea for this
work is founded on Panamarenko’s memory of a trip to the border
region between Zambia and Zimbabwe, where he visited the Victoria
Waterfalls in 1975. He drew some sketches and also built a scale
model of his idea, but never pursued the project. Until 2011...

The works consists of three floating islands, the smallest of which
measures ten metres by five metres and is four metres high. They have
been made of thin strips of high-quality reflective stainless steel
and weight more than two tons. Six colourful red crabs, also made of
stainless steel, sit on the islands, their opened pincers waving in
the wind. The ensemble, which floats thanks to more than 200 jerrycans,
is probably the largest work that Panamarenko ever made. A wide vortex
next to the islands creates a swell and movement.
