Uşak medallion carpet, 16th century carpet. Detail, mainly showing how such an old carpet often went through repeated repairs.
Note that the ‘repairs’ consisted in inserting rectangular pieces of another old (Uşak) carpet into this one.
Modern restoration would fill gaps with new warp and weft, and knots of carefully selected high quality wool (a specialist’s work, of course).
