This was built after the first road to the summit was opened in 1908. The chalet grew in popularity and it was described as "the epitome of luxury with large sitting rooms, ample fireplaces, well ventilated bedrooms and hot and cold water in bathrooms" ...
In 1924 the management was transferred to the Railways Department with a coach transfer from the station at the base of the mountain. After WWII the chalet was immensely popular with European migrants, providing a comforting reminder of such places in their homelands. The train connection was discontinued in 1956 but people still enjoyed it as a base for snow activities, ice-skating on the lake, bush-walks and relaxation.
Sadly, under various managements, the chalet has been allowed to decline and is now under restoration, hopefully to its former glory, with sensitive modernisation and without losing its old world ambience.
