Horrible looking image isn't it! Well, though hard to make out which brown blur she is, this is when the mother Grizzly charged us. We had just rounded a rocky outcrop a little ways after crossing Avalanche Creek in the previous image when there about 50 yards in front of us was a mother grizzly with two cubs. When she saw us, she immediately charged! Fortunately, we were so petrified that we both just stood there! I did manage to push the shutter on my camera, at hip level and pointed towards her, but with no time for adjusting anything on the camera and this was before auto-focus cameras! Well, just standing there without moving turned out to be the right thing to do as when she got to between 10 and 15 feet from us, she veered off! We later read about how grizzlies will sometimes do this as a warning to basically tell you to get out of the area! Once we regained our senses, we retreated back on the trial we had come. We were less than a half mile from the road on a "self-guiding nature trail, right near Avalanche Campground.
