Beechworth and its surrounds, was established in the 1850s when gold was discovered in substantial quantities. The Australian Bushranger, Ned Kelly (early criminal and thief) was tried in the Beechworth courthouse, that is still standing and in good condition. Kelly was found guilty and hanged in the first Melburne Jail.
