The disk that I keep my photos on seemed to go a bit off kilter. I decided I had better get a new one. I also decided to see if I could improve the performance of my system while I was at it. I could get a new 2.0TB drive for $99.99. It was USB 3.0. I do actually have a USB 3.0 port on my machine. Maybe this was time for a little upgrade. I have used the USB 3.0 port for a USB 2.0 hub. Hence everything was operating at 2.0 speeds. One of my other drives was 3.0, but hooked up to a 2.0 port is is just like any other 2.0 disk. So I got a new hub that was USB 3.0. Well, it took a long time to move my photography files (650 GB) onto the new disk. Once that was done I started experimenting with file transfers. Using my backup software I found that data moves 2.5 times faster when I am backing up from a 3.0 device to another 3.0 device. So, I got an improvement and I was happy with it.

Today's photo is of the disks that I keep hooked up to my computer. The one next to the hub contains all my original files. The middle one contains all my photography files. The right one is a back up disk for the other two. I also have a large drive hooked up to my router which I use for back up. One more safety precaution is that I keep a drive in the safety deposit box which I bring home occasionally and run a backup onto it. I hope that keeps my data integrity up to snuff.

Just for fun, I calculated how many 360k floppies would be needed to back up 2 TB. It would take over 5,500,000. Can you imagine sitting there feeding your old original PC that many disks? Me neither.

John, you're living in the dark ages if you want to
back up to 360K disks! I figure that by using 3.5-inch
disks that hold 1.4 megabytes each, you would only
need 1,428,000 disks. That would save a lot of
time AND space. Get with the program! Do you have a
drive that reads from and writes to such disks?

It was $49. 3 3.0 ports and 4 2.0 ports.
