Photographed on the night of 8-Jan-2015 when the comet was about 44 million miles from Earth, this image shows the beautiful blue-green color of the coma and the faint tail.
This image was composed from 39 sixty second exposures made with my Canon T2i DSLR. The exposures were made over a two hour period through an 8 inch reflecting telescope at f/4.9 (1000mm focal length), as the comet moved to the north (to the right in this image).
The tail of a comet does not trail behind the comet, it always points away from the sun - in this case, to the east (up in this photo).
