Black Hmong (probably) farms. From 1975 to 1987, land was held collectively. Land is now privately owned. The farmers in the northern hilltribe areas farm cooperatively, helping each other till, plant and harvest. Water buffalo are the locomotive power; rice seedlings are planted by hand. In south Vietnam, such as in the Mekong Delta, rice is planted by scattering seed.
