20141022_A220013 The Things You Learn From Physics (Wed 22 Oct)

Darling Harbour, Sydney, NSW

First, that a honking great amount of lens flare from shooting into the general direction of the sun can cause a pretty substantial amount of chromatic aberration.

Second, that dropping the colours by converting to B&W almost makes a virtue of that problem. Almost.

Third, that I really hate the fact that something that I love doing (physics) is also something that I am in no way gifted in. But then, you'd think I'd be used to that from photography.

Fourth, I seriously need to make an effort to lose weight.

And fifth, there's no point in wanting to meet celebrities unless they want to meet you too, and I have yet to do anything to put me into that category. And am not likely to in my current job.

Hang on, how was all of this (and the photo) derived from physics? This was taken on the afternoon before I went to see a presentation by Professor Brian Cox at the State Theatre. We (as in Brian Cox and I) met after the show (point 5 and point 3, the connection was non-existent) and I have a photo of us together (point 4, with bells on). Because the meeting wouldn't be until about 22:30 it would have been too late to go home afterwards, so I booked a hotel in Darling Harbour to stay at that night. I'd taken this day and the day after off work.

The intention was to meet a couple of former colleagues for lunch (done and enjoyed), check in to the hotel and get a snooze (not done to the extent that I wanted to), then wander off in the late afternoon sun to get a PAD. I decided to experiment with the light coming through the water feature (done.) Then I went off to have a steak at a nearby meat and wine place (no mushroom sauce? Seriously?), bought a bottle of water from the local Kwik-E-Mart, and headed off to see the performance.

Met with Brian, was given copies of two of his books which were autographed to nobody in particular (I've never seen the point of E-Bay collectors getting signatures that aren't made out to themselves personally and reminiscent of their own personal experience, but what the hey). Then I returned to the hotel.

And barely slept because I could not get my mind off points 3 and 5.

I later shared a link to the aforementioned photo with a very small select circle of PBasers who were kind enough not to say "HOLY S**T, NOW I SEE WHY YOU DON'T DO SP's!!!"

So the connection between the photo and the day was a touch tenuous. But at least this is someone who seems to know where they're going. Seems to.

A great story! The monochrome fits very well with the image. It accentuates the shadows. Great framing too. V
