The difference in mantle shade was much more obvious when viewed directly through the scope. Vega candidate is on the left. American Herring Gull on right. Note whiter head and thicker white tertial crescent (the band between the black wingtips and the gray mantle) on the Vega candidate. Size was essentially identical.
