high elevation could fire all sorts of nasty stuff on cavalry and infantry
attempting to cross that space. By this era, there were exploding shells and
canister shot which made these weapons a giant shotgun. There were on the order
of 4000 casualties just from an afternoon's fighting in that field in the center.
