Downy Woodpecker

I was thrilled to see this beauty at Alton Baker Park. I wasn't sure whether it is a Downy or an Acorn Woodpecker. Thanks to feedback it has been identified as a Downy. I don't get to see woodpeckers of any kind very often at all! I was standing on a bridge shooting pictures of the stream below when this woodpecker landed in a dead tree almost in front of me! Sometimes such things are so exciting that I mess up my shots. I got some good ones this time, and the woodpecker kept moving around the tree trying to find food. I thank it for that! :)

That is a male Downey Woodpecker. The males have the bit of red, the females do not.

Good catch. They are funny, busy guys to watch.

Yup - you nailed it! Both the shot and the ID. Male Downys have the red at the back of the head, females don't. Both have the white patch on the back like this one.

I'm also guessing Downy, but I get my Downy's and Hairy's confused!
Great capture Vern! V
