The Great West Screen by Hutton

The whole of the nave cross-section is filled by this screen, but to appreciate the artistry that went in to the work, it seems necessary to home in on a part; here a mix of the static saints and the dynamic angels viewed from inside. As things appear to alter according to how much dust has got in as well as to the light, there is probably no definitive version, but this seems to express what both John Hutton and Basil Spence were trying to do. At the time it was pushing against the boundary of available technology.

The story behind this is very well told at http://www.slideshare.net/oliver_1/the-great-west-screen - well worth getting the full-screen slideshow
