Kingsford Plant in the Dark

I thought I would check out the camera's ability to shoot in low light situations. We have a lot of that in Oregon. So I went out for a drive in the wee hours of the morning to see what I could find for subjects. I thought the kingsford Briquets plant would be a good subject. The photo was shot at ISO 6400.

Interesting approach for this image. A relatively fast shutter speed and high ISO night shot. But it worked and worked very well.

Wow, interesting and dramatic photo. I had not thought much about where or how briquets are made.

You woudn, t think there would be beauty in an industrial picture, however this is one that could be framed and hung on a wall.

The camera did an amazing job! Exposed perfectly. Nice pop of red too. V
Judith Barnett22-Nov-2014 19:35
Excellent exposure, did you have to use a tripod or mono?
Alexander Kazakov22-Nov-2014 08:45

Carl Carbone22-Nov-2014 03:00
Looks like you have a winner there! Nice capture.
Steve Thuman22-Nov-2014 01:45
Excellent! A bit of noise, but to be expected in that dark of a scene at that ISO. And quite frankly, we are quite spoiled if we think a shot like this is noisy. Just a few years ago such a shot was not even possible (without a long exposure and resulting blur of the steam or smoke. Certainly even cleaner than a long exposure a half dozen years ago too.

Quite a nice result for that high an ISO Vern.

My kind of subjects, great with this lighting and fire coming from the stack. Impressive high iso result. "V"

Excellent low-light capture, well done. v

Good capture with the higher ISO. BTW, I am using the new DXO Optic Pro 10 to work with the RAW image files. If you don't mind waiting a couple of minutes for it to grind away, it has an amazing noise reduction function.

Excellent low-light capture with the D800, Vern. How do you like this camera?

I love it - there is a place like that here but I am too afraid to stop by myself. I don't remember seeing the red from the stack like that. Very spooky!

What a fantastic shot, love the light and colour.
Cliff Harvey 21-Nov-2014 06:57
The Nikon D800 series is beyond belief...! I use the D810 and find I can use ISO6400 in low light all the time, with people shots, which come out tack sharp and with no noticeable noise...! In fact, next time you're out at this location or another similar, try a few shots at 12,800 and see how THAT looks...! I've tried, and the images need little if any noise reduction software help, nearly none...!
Laura Milholland21-Nov-2014 06:55
A good test of the camera and a nicely done shot. Great job on the exposure, Vern.
Helen Betts21-Nov-2014 06:31
Excellent low-light industrial capture, Vern. The D800 excels at shots like this, and ISO 6400 is no problem at all.
Tom Munson21-Nov-2014 06:06
I would say the camera and you performed perfectly.
Paul Milholland21-Nov-2014 06:01
