Paul de Chomedey, Sieur de Maisonneuve founded the settlement of
Ville-Marie on Isle de Mont-real, at the confluence
of the Saint Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers, in 1642.
The island, which is about 50 km long and 16 km
wide, is now the main part of the City of Montreal.
