La Charte de la langue française
(The Charter of the French Language), also known
as Loi 101 (Bill 101), is the central legislative part
of Québécois language policy, which states that
French is the official language of Québéc. The
charter was proposed, by the government of Premier
René Lévesque, and granted Royal Assent in 1977.
You might have noticed that the sandwich board in
the photo, in yesterday’s almost daily email had the
words Bienvenue (and) Welcome above the “cruise
ship”, in accordance with Bill 101 which insists;
Signs and posters must be in the official language
and they may also be in another language provided
the official language be markedly predominant.
