20140619_6190035 Spectacularly Unsuccessful, I Think (Thu 19 Jun)

Ripples Café, Pyrmont

This is not what I consider to be the best shot that I took this day. Indeed it's similar to some other shots that I've taken of wharves across Pyrmont Bay, and had it been posted back when it was taken (in June) rather than now (in November) it would not have been my PAD for this day.

So why is it?

Because of the subject. Ripples is, sorry, WAS located at the end of this pier jutting out into Pyrmont Bay. I had occasionally seen signs pointing down the road from the mainland announcing the location of "Ripples" which I later found to be a café / restaurant. This café / restaurant, as it turned out. And it occurred to me that given the location it might be worth investigating further when I had cause to do so.

Instead, time ran out. I noticed the signs pointing to the restaurant having disappeared, but didn't investigate further at the time. Last week I was over on this wharf seeking out a PAD and noticed that it was now a place called LuMi. A place which was also locked up and eerily quiet during a lunchtime that it was supposed to be open. And I looked at the menu that was posted up (dated September 2014) and realised why it was closed, not that any signs admitted to a permanent closure.

When I did a search on Google I found this:
Ripples Sydney Wharf is now closed. Sydney Restaurant Group is excited to announce the opening of LuMi Bar & Dining in its place. LuMi (which means small lights in Italian) features a casual fine dining restaurant coupled with a modern European bar.

Excited. Casual "fine dining". Uh-huh. This is the menu:
LuMi September 2014
Italian Chawanmushi
Potato Focaccia
Eggplant
Pistachio, Tempura

Stinging Nettle Chitarra
Mussel cream, Crispy Pork,
Fennel Pollen
or
Pig Jowl
Buckwheat, Celeriac

Milk Ice cream
Sour Cherry, Citrus Sabay
On Milk Crumble, Cocoa Powder $49

I'm sorry, but What. The. Expletive Deleted? Casual fine dining consisting of three courses for $49 (OK, that's not too bad price-wise, nor is it exceptionally great) but it's three courses in which you have two, count them two choices of main. Two! Hoooooly sheet, open those doors, I'm there. I love going to a "fine dining" café which literally has fewer freaking choices than a freaking McDonalds. And I'll bet these guys are wondering why, oh why, the doors have closed and it can only be due to the dining public having no taste, not that they have an objection to having literally all the culinary choices of a coin toss.

Ay-yay-yay...
