A famous cafe serving more than 250 Belgian beers, the largest selection in Ghent.
Its unique speciality is the Maxi, a large bulb glass containing 1.5 litres of beer that cannot stand up on its own so it comes in a bespoke wooden stand. Because the glass and holders were often stolen, to order a maxi you have to surrender your left shoe. It gets put in a wire basket that is lowered from the roof and is winched back up until you have finished your beer and given back the Maxi glass and holder.
The cafe gained its name having been owned originally centuries ago by descendants of both Dulle Griet, a mad Flemish woman, and a Ghent witchfinder. Legend has it that Dulle Griet placed a curse on him and all his descendants to be moody, snarling sourpusses.
On Vrijdagmarkt Square, about 100 yards from the its namesake the Great Cannon.
