This Ghent square is named after the St Veerle Church which stood on its site and that was built in 1212 and demolished in 1581. From the 1400s to 1700s the convicted prevalent counterfeiters of these times met a rather grisly end here, the only place in Flanders where they were thrown into a cauldron of boiling liquid. Several old buildings built between the 16th and 18th centuries line the square. Now almost all are restaurants and cafes. The original gateway to the Old Fishmarket, now to a visitor centre complex, stands in the left corner.
