Root-maggot Fly, Hylemya alcathoe

Family Anthomyiidae

One would think from the name that the larvae would feed on plant roots, but the larvae of the two species
described at BugGuide.net, Hylemya alcathoe and H. partita, feed on deer and cattle dung, respectively.
