20140408_4082993 That Certain Smile - The Rhino Countdown III (Tue 08 Apr)

Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour, NSW

I've previously (7 February and 17 March) included shots of a series of Rhino sculptures that appeared around Sydney in the early part of the year as part of a fund raising / awareness campaign of the plight of rhinoceroses in the wild. I did intend to try to capture all of them but unfortunately didn't get around to it, probably in part because while I was still shooting each and every day at this time of the year I had stopped posting every day and had a backlog of over a month of images by this point so I lost track of what I had and hadn't shot.

I'm also a touch annoyed with myself over this one as I didn't take the time to shoot the nameplate giving the details of the artist. That's exceptionally annoying because out of all of the sculptures this was probably my favourite. The sculptures themselves were identical, only the paintwork was different. But with this one the artist has managed to use shading around the mouth and a fix of the eye to give a smile every bit as enigmatic as the Mona Lisa's.

I shot this while walking back to the station after work which accounts for the sun's relatively low position through the trees in the background. I got it into that position because I thought that the sunniness reinforced the smile of the rhino.

I love these fun sculptures. We had a cow parade in Dublin a few years ago although sadly a number of the sculptures were vandalized.

Very colorful. I like the POV of the rhino. Very well composed.
