Both Myanmar government and rebel sides have used landmines whose location is inadequately recorded. A teacher tries to downplay the danger of the rebel mines by saying that they have batteries and become obsolete if the batteries are not changed every six months, while the government uses Western-made landmines which remain dangerous indefinitely. Most refugees are frightened of going back to their villages because they fear persecution. But also the landmines restrict movement and inhibit the refugees from returning home.
