l am amused at the name Ponderay.
That is almost how one pronounces it...
which should be Pondoray. Oray being the way the French
pronounce Oreilles the French word for ears.

As a matter of fact, Hal I do! Only because a friend of mine at work and I were just talking about that yesterday. The French trappers who initially made contact with the local indigenous people saw them wearing these really huge shell earrings, so the called them the Pend d'Oreilles and the name stuck! What's funny is just over the boarder to the east in Idaho they have transliterated the word into Ponderay and have a city by that name as well as several other geographic locations. So there you go!

Oreille means "ear"
and pend comes from the word for hang or hanging.
l wonder why this place is called Pend Oreille
