The labours of Hercules, a well-known type of Sarcophagus.

The sarcophagus was found by coincidence in 1991, near the Seyyid Burhanettin Türbesi (in the Archeological Museum’s neighbourhood), during digging operations in preparation of a new ‘Kültür Sitesi’ (Cultural Center).
It is from the so-called ‘Pamphylia’-type (= the Antalya region) and dated to the 2nd or early 3th century AD.
Dimensions: 215 x 101 cm, height: 133 cm.

On the picture: A close-up of the 9th labour (Herkules obtains the girdle of Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons).
Hippolyta possessed a magical girdle she was given by her father Ares, the god of war. Herkules was sent to retrieve it for Admeta, the daughter of King Eurystheus. Most versions of the story say that Hippolyta was so impressed with Herkules that she gave him the girdle without argument, perhaps while visiting him on his ship. Then (according to Pseudo-Apollodorus), the goddess Hera, making herself appear as one of the Amazons, spread a rumor among them that Herkules and his crew were actually abducting their queen. So the Amazons attacked the ship. In the fray that followed, Herkules slew Hippolyta, stripped her of the belt, fought off the attackers, and sailed away.

If you like sarcophagi, don't miss the ones I show in collections at Istanbul or Antalya.
