Morella is the historical capital of Els Ports region.
Its surrounding municipal area of 414 km2 is the biggest in the province of Castelló and one of the broadest in The Comunitat Valenciana. The walled town is at 1,000 metres above sea level and the surrounding region is between 600 and 1,300 metres. The most of the region flows into Bergantes, which is a river which goes towards the river Ebre.
The municipal surrounding municipal area of Morella is divided into "denes" and the town into three parishes: Santa Maria, Sant Joan and Sant Miquel. There are also two villages, Xiva and Hortells which were independent up to the 1970's. Other historical villages of the area are Herbeset, La Llèqua, La Pobleta and Salvassòria.
Morella has a population of 2,931 inhabitants (January 2006), so its population density is of 7 inhab./ km2, of whom a 12% are foreigners, mainly Europeans (Rumanians, Germans and Italians) and Americans (Brazilians).
