Pam Stuby Turner and I were allowed to look for items related to our time at the school and take pictures of the building on Tuesday, 10-7-2014. School was out for fall break. There was construction going on at the entrance and cleaning was going on in the cafeteria.
These are a few of my observations:
The building is now 55 years old. It's showing it's age but overall it's in pretty good shape.
Everything was extremely clean and tidy.
The area we used for student parking is now grass. Didn't look like a car had been in that grass in years. The area we used for motorcycles now has handicap parking and bicycle racks.
Early on, the girls were instructed not to use the stairways that had metal grates on the floors. Can't believe someone actually thought a teenage boy would look up thru that grating. 55 years later, some of that grating is still there.
A lot of the windows and doors are now covered but the buildings lighting is very good. Very bright and the bulbs they use were pleasing to the eye and to my camera. Most of the lights go on and off automatically, as you go into different areas.
It seems that the cafeteria no longer uses it's dishwasher. It was still there but looked to be unused. I'm guessing they use disposable plates and silverware.
There seems to be air-conditioning everywhere. Each classroom has a window unit.
The office area is completely different and larger. The Principal's office is much larger and nicer. The Assistant Principal's office is on the second floor. While we were there, work was being done on the entrance to make it more secure. It'll soon be enclosed from the front door directly to the office. Mr. La Fever's office is no more.
Our pirate is long gone. They are still the pirates but theirs are different. Saw three or four different variations.
To me, the library was the biggest change. High tech. Computers everywhere, must have been 30-40 for the students to use. In fact, there's computers all over the school. Not as many books. Nice comfy chairs and foot stools. All it seemed to lack was a latte machine. Ms. Jones would be amazed.
Handicap access points. Even the gym has wheelchair lifts on both sides to the upper seating areas.
Lots and lots of signs and posters, mostly inspirational.
The whole school is bright and colorful.
All the landscaping looked good. I'd forgotten just how much grassy area this school has.
The one thing that made me a little sad at first, was the football and baseball fields. The baseball field looked to have been unused for a long time. No wear on the base paths or home plate area. There was no pitchers mound. The football stands look small. The goal posts are doing double duty as soccer goals. The lights are no longer there. The football scoreboard surely can't work, as bad as it looks. Then it came to me that this school is no longer a high school. For kids this age, it's probably luxurious.
The staff is all so young.
