Finja Saxaphone Quartet playing inside the former Rochester Aqueduct.
This aqueduct originally carried the Erie Canal over the Genesee River. Originally built
between 1836 and 1842, it is 850 feet long. In 1918, the canal is rerouted to cross the river
further south, a project that wasn't completed until 1920. Following this, the Rochester
subway used the Aqueduct till 1956. It currently is unused and access is discouraged
though a number of homeless individuals live in the dark recesses.
Today it was open for a rare tour during River Romance weekend.
I believe that the Quartet is made up of graduate students from the Eastman School of Music.
