Kookaburra on our railing, 2014

We awoke this morning to find this beautiful kookaburra sitting on the railing of our apartment. He obligingly stayed put while we attempted to photograph him.
Kookaburras are native Australian birds of the Kingfisher family. They eat small mammals and reptiles, even fairly large snakes, hence the powerful beak! They are renowned for their wonderful "laugh" which rings through the bush (native forest).
