The 48" diameter trans-Alaska pipeline is pictured as it crosses Goldstream Road, just five miles from the village of Fox, about twenty miles north of Fairbanks. The pipeline allows oil to be transported the 800 miles from Prudhoe Bay, on the Arctic Ocean, to the pipeline terminus at Valdez on the Pacific Ocean. Most of the line is above ground, to keep from thawing the permanently frozen ground along much of the route.
