Well-equipped, Imperial Beach, California, 2014

The sport of skateboarding is an offshoot of surfing. This young man carries both a skateboard and a surfboard as he heads towards the ocean. It is an incongruous sight, and I intensified his purposeful stride by including the long wall stretching through the background. The wall features a flow of repeating tiles and windows that seem to draw him forward. I use the late afternoon light to add a theatrical mood to the scene.

Thanks, Guest, for enjoying this image. As for that "Classic Phil Douglis" award, I presume you are referring to the incongruous burden this fellow is carrying. I do, indeed, tend to look for the incongruities are always around us and then try to work them into photographs.

I am glad you noted the gentle bend in the wall as an extension of the sea itself. I sensed it when making this picture, but did not fully realize its impact on the meaning of this image. Thanks, as always.

The curvature of the wall mimics a wave or a skateboard arena inviting this well prepared young man to partake in either activity.
