Wings, Imperial Beach, California, 2014

This wideangle sunset photo features far more than the glow of the setting sun itself. I had been tracking the movement of the winged-like cloud for about ten minutes or so. The cloud eventually merged with the sun, just as a seagull soared into my frame. I was able to make the gull’s outspread wings echo the shape of the winged cloud -- two completely different natural forms in complete synch with each other.

Thanks so much for the comment, Blizzard. The shape of those clouds was purely my good fortune. The flying gull was purely patience on my part. They were all over the sky and I just waited until one hit this spot. Thanks again.

Thanks, Roland, for commenting on the composition of this photograph. I immediately recognized the potential structure of this image, pairing a set of wing-shaped clouds with the outstretched wings of an actual seagull. All I needed to do was patiently follow these clouds as they moved slowly through the sky, and whenever a seagull flew into the frame, stop it in flight. Over a five or ten minute period, several birds entered the frame. I was able to catch this one in a prefect spot, hanging in space just to the right of one of those clouds.

Nice composition with the gull, clouds and setting sun. V
