Guildhall detail

the head of the south west corner post and dragon beam. On buildings of the C14th the 1st floor often overhangs the ground floor using a 'jetty' with the beams cantilevered over the ground floor wallplate. When this is done on both sides of a corner, a diagonal dragon beam accepts the tenons of all the floor beams in that quarter. The decorative bressumer originally forming the sole plate of the 1st floor has been bodged here, the meeting detail having evidently been lost; mitre joints were inappropriate and some sort of overlap/halving would have been used
