Framed By Rock

FWIW...this 3 mile hike to and from Lower Calf Creek Falls may have almost killed me....ran out of water on the way back, a blazing afternoon heat, the trail washed out by a morning rain, got lost....blood pressure due to loss of fluids dropped to 71/40....brain damage starts to set in fairly quickly(1~2hrs)from circulatory failure....but I feel just a dumb as I every was, (smile)

The deeper truth is that I understood my real danger and took care of myself on the way back in, stopping in any shade to lower my core body temperature, and when I got back also, I slowly rehabilitated myself...the lesson is....you have got to be smart, (especially when you are dumb).

Spectacularly beautiful photo--but my goodness your situation sounded scary. ~Melanie

I have plenty of hiking and camping experience in the Boy Scouts and 3 good friends to take along an a challenging hike is a 3 liter camelback, any of the epa approved water purification methods and a Garmin etrax. A granola bar or 2 don't hurt either. Paul

I carry a bp monitor because I am serious trying to cut all other meds because of my anti-epilepsy brain calming medicines are going to be a very long term proposition. Unhappily.

In any case, I measured my BP when I staggered back into camp and the rangers seemed worried about me...as was I.

Three factors led to this difficulty:

1: I was fresh and high energy on the way out, though this was and is a very strenuous hike...and so there was some tiredness when I began my return.

2. it was now Noon and very hot...blindingly so when I began my return. I had a half liter of water...and three miles was now an eternity even nursing the water I had.

3. I was driven to ground to find shelter twice on the way out because of rain and thunder storms, lots of desert lightening. The trail back disappeared in places and I took a wrong turn up a blind canyon; adding some distance to my return.

And a question back to you...just where am I to find a hiking friend at 6:45am out in the wilderness? I swim alone in the ocean also...

I guess I ain't got no friends...lol....;>}}}

I see lots of water for use as long as you had your portable purification pump with you or some of those god awful iodine pills. Do they even still sell those any more?? Sweet looking image BTW, Paul
Wait..... how do you know your BP out hiking unless you brought along a portable BP cuff, instead of a portable purification pump????

This is a spectacular photo - but not worth killing yourself over.

The other lesson to learn - hike with a friend.
