Processionary caterpillars

I happened to be hiking alone (thanks to the rest of my group for turning back after 3 miles....) somewhere on Porquerolles Island.
Came upon these most unusual caterpillars (well actually I almost stepped on them....) and I was fascinated by them!
Thank goodness I didn't pick one up, as we used to do when we were children!
Our friends, Uschi and John, told us that these are very dangerous caterpillars in Europe, especially in the south of France!
They said that the French will usually burn the caterpillar nests from the trees while the Germans shoot them out!

Processionary caterpillars represent a public health hazard because they have thousands of hairs which contain an urticating, or irritating, protein called thaumetopoein.
These hairs can be blown by the wind into contact with people and animals, resulting in painful skin irritations and rashes and, in some cases, allergic reactions in some people and animals.

Indeed they are very dangerous Stephanie
They let go the little hairs and this causes lots of pain when such a little hair touches our skin or eyes.
The hairs have little angles. And one caterpilar has thousants or more little hairs. It's the same with ants and we got them too in Belgium

We get them every year in the coniferous trees. If travelling on the autoroutes you see the white, silky nests. They damage the trees and shrubs, eating the foliage as they go. This on top of being a hazard to humans and animals.

Fascinating Stephanie! I have never seen any caterpillars this long, they must be in "procession" to make themselves
appear much longer than they are? V

Fantastic find and capture ~V
I don't know why people are so harsh with these creatures while for sure they've been living with us for thousands of years; in the nature nothing is excessive.
