The broad boulevard leading to the Brandenburg Gate and bisecting Tiergarten was named in honor of the victims of the bloodily surpressed 1953 workers' uprising in East Berlin.

The section between the Brandenburger Tor and the Siegessäule (Victory Column, west of Brandenburg Gate) turns into a mega-party zone
on New Year's Eve and huge events i.e. the recent Soccer World Championship.
