This method of smoking flavoured substances, and later flavoured tobacco, originated with primitive devices in Asia nearly 1000 years ago. It then spread from Persia and India throughout the Middle East and Turkey over the centuries. Hookahs became larger, and more complex and ornate in design, and are now used in parts of Japan, Europe and America, but the practice has not really taken on in the UK.
