Despenser Reredos

Norwich Cathedral, Norfolk

This reredos or altar screen is regarded as one of the finest European paintings of the Middle Ages. It was donated to Norwich Cathedral by Bishop Despenser between 1380 and 1400. The five paintings display the flagellation, carrying of the cross, crucifixion, resurrection and ascension. It is situated in the St. Luke’s Chapel which serves as the Parish Church of St. Mary-in-the-Marsh.
