The female lyrebird would strut along the thick bough, negotiate some branches and foliage before flying awkwardly down to the nest she was building in the head of a large tree fern. Here she would carefully insert her nesting material into the bulky nest. However sometimes she would miss her mark in the tree fern and land in the deep gully and so she would have to return up the bank and start again. Lyrebirds are basically terrestrial birds and are not built for flying any distance.
