Sun-Tan Village is a designated area of east Hialeah from E. 6th Avenue east to the Hialeah city limits at the railroad tracks and from Hialeah Drive north to the south side of E. 13th Street. Sun Deck Homes was owned by the Vellanti family, consisting of Frank Vellanti, Sr., sons Frank Vellanti II and Thomas "Tom" Vellanti, and son-in-law George Busher, Sr.. Together they developed many homes in Hialeah, and the Sun Tan Village Shopping Center containing the Essex Theatre, which every Hialeah kid went to during the 1950's. They later relocated their operations to develop and name what is known as the community of Leisure City for a retirement community in South Dade County. Their company, Sun Deck Homes, developed the concept of a solidly poured concrete home which was virtually hurricane proof as a testament in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew. The homes featured stairs up to the roof with railings around the roof so the folks could enjoy the outdoor ocean breezes, sunlight and starlight, etc. up on their rooftops. They also developed Royal Colonial Mobile Home Park, Leisure City Stores, Coconut Palm Trading Post, Treasure Village in the Florida Keys, and Twelve Oaks RV Park in Sanford, Florida.

Tom Vellanti was a Commander in the U. S. Coast Guard Reserve in the mid-1970's and he was my unit's Commanding Officer for a couple of years. He was a really great guy and everyone in the unit liked him, which is rare in any military organization.
