Aphid Popsicle

A very large bumblebee left the bee balm flowers in our garden and ventured a few feet away to a nine bark tree that was flowering. Into the shaded area it went and then exited with what I thought was a small flower petal and it rested on the leaves of a Japanese Maple. On closer examination it seems it had found an aphid and took it to the Japanese Maple to sip on the honey dew nectar emitted by the aphid. This is something that ants do regularly with aphids and it appears that bees also do this although the articles I have read suggest that bees do this because they cant find enough pollen and nectar flowers. That's not the case here as there are hundreds of bee friendly flowers among the hundred plus varieties in our gardens. Very interesting behavior I thought...Canon 7D and 100 28 macro
