Life cycle, General Cemetery, Sucre, Bolivia, 2014

Many of the tombs here are set among magnificent old trees. This monument is bathed in shadows cast by a canopy of leaves. I use the play of light and shadow to abstract the monument. I intend my interpretation to suggest the cycle of life itself as the shadows come and go with the passing of the day and the seasons.

The interplay of light and shadow is at the heart of expressive photography, Steve. We have to be aware of how and why this interplay can create meaning. When I looked at this statue, I did not see it as a statue. My first thoughts were about how the light and shadows were playing over the chest of it, where the heart itself would beat within.
