Two Nephila clavipes Golden Orb-weaver spiders played out a tragic love story over a couple of weeks in the Botanical Gardens, Sydney. At least I think it was love for him! Our seven-legged Romeo is a very small male, who was extremely cautious about getting close to our Juliet, the much larger female (she's about 10cm long). Over a week or so he repeatedly dared to approach her - trying to get to first base? Unfortunately, the one moment he finally got within touching distance on the same side of the web, a fly landed elsewhere on the web and she decided food was better than romance! The day afterwards, their web was destroyed by garden works. She rebuilt the web, but our seven-legged hero had been replaced by two eight-legged suitors on her web a couple of days later. I never saw Romeo again...
